The main division is between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). AC is universal now for domestic and industrial supply, but DC used to be used in some places in the early part of last century. Automobiles use DC at 12V which is I think universal now. AC in domestic use can be at 50Hz (Europe and many other places) or 60Hz (North America), and can be at either 240V or 120V.

The two types of electric current are direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC). In direct current, used in battery powered devices, the electrons move in only one direction through the system. In alternating current, used in most appliances or anything plugged into the wall, the electrons switch directions 50 - 60 times a second (country dependent) as they move through the system. Both currents have their pros and cons and thus they are both in use today.

Electric current can be either direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC). With DC, the direction of flow is constant. With AC, the direction of flow changes rapidly from one direction to the other.
