Soviet Socialist republics were semi-autonomous entities under the authority of the Communist Party from around 1921 until the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991. "Soviet" means council, in theory consisting of workers. "Socialist" implies that the means of production as well as certain service services are controlled and administered by the state. "Republic" meaning a representative form of government. Russia was the most prominent of all the Soviet Socialist Republics but there were many others. After the dissolution of the USSR many of the former Soviet Republics became independent states, such as Latvia, Estonia, and Kazakhstan.

The Russian Empire had long been ruled by the Romanov Family (for 300 years) -- and the Russian people were long searching for relief. A young revolutionary -- Vladmir Lenin -- would study and begin to write rhetoric on socialist/communist ideas found in Karl Marx works (primarily the Communist Manifesto). Lenin had long held distain for the royals -- especially following the (what he considered) false accusation to his brother and sister that they were conspiring against the royal family.

Lenin would become a dynamic speaker for workers rights -- and he would in turn face exile to Siberia and then to Europe (Germany). The Russian working class and peasant class would begin to organize under socialist revolutionaries who discussed the benefits of a socialist society. A peaceful protest of the palace in 1905 would turn bloody -- when workers marched toward the palace gates with demands -- in turn Nicolas II (the then Czar of Russia) would order the palace guard to "fire into the crowd". Over 500 would die.

The poor economy, and the Czars constant failure on the battlefields -- plus, the subsequent involvement in WWI -- put added strain on the people's patience with the royal family.

Lenin would return on the eve of the 1917 revolution -- he would lead with his Red Army (Bolsheviks) -- who overthrew the government with the help of other famous revolutionaries. The Czar and his family (the Anastasi story) would be assassinated and butchered. With the fall of the Romanov dynasty -- Lenin would soon gain power over the revolution and establish a government which changed the name to the "Soviet Union" -- and all Russians would become "soviets" -- workers joined by a common goal -- equal opportunity for all.

Please note -- the new country never had democratic equality -- the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic -- would soon fiind itself placed under a tyranical rule of Josef Stalin who despite his "allied" position with Britain and US during WWII -- would place the Russian people under fear, distruction, and terror for his entire reign.

The Soviet Union would go on a campaign of takeover of all Eastern Europe after WWII -- and would engage in an arms race with the United States until 1991 with its collaspe.

At the fall of the Soviet Union, there were 15 republics that made up the USSR. While constitutionally each republic had some autonomy and were a union with the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, in actuallity the rule of the highly cenralized Communist Party made the union merely nominal. Here is a list of the 15 republics that made up the USSR at the time of it's collapse in 1991: Russian SFSR, Ukrainian SSR, Belorussian SSR, Uzbek SSR, Kazakh SSR, Georgian SSR, Azerbaijan SSR, Lithuanian SSR, Moldavian SSR, Latvian SSR, Kirghiz SSR, Tajik SSR, Armenian SSR, Turkmen SSR, and Estonian SSR.
