The Vietnam Womens Memorial is one of the three parts that make up the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; it is a statue consisting of two nurses (most women in the Vietnam War were nurses, making these nurses a symbol) and an injured man in one of the nurse's arms.
There are two different bronze statue areas, The Three Soldiers and the Vietnam Women' Memorial, which consists of three nurses and a wounded soldier. So there are seven soldiers present at the Memorial.

Might be because of the statue of several US military female nurses that was added after the wall was built. That was the only time that a "women's issue" was brought up. Like most things in life, the "wall" was supposed to be a NON-politically correct simple memorial. Then came the statue of three soldiers (representing three races); then came the female nurses (representing women); there was talk of a K-9 statue representing the nearly 5,000 US war dogs that served in Vietnam; of which 43 were killed in action. Fair is fair, the US military canines deserve a statue near the wall too! They truly were "man's best friend" in the Vietnam War.
