The most recent confirmed tornado of 2010 was an EF2 that struck near Elsinore, Missouri on the evening of December 31, though other, as yet unconfimed tornadoes may have occurred later that night as tornadoes continued into the very early morning hours of January1, 2011.

It is difficult to determine exactly, but based on official records:

  1. El Reno, Oklahoma. May 31, 2013: 2.6 miles wide
  2. Hallam, Nebraska. May 22, 2004: 2.5 miles wide
  3. Reserve, Kansas. May 17, 1896: 2.25 miles wide
  4. Moshannon State Forest, Pennsylvania. May 31, 1985: 2.2+ miles wide
  5. Edwards County, Kansas. May 4, 2007: 2.2 miles wide

Beyond this, it is difficult to find records, and many rankings are probably essentially tied.

Note: the Mulhall, Oklahoma tornado of May 3, 1999 likely deserves the #1 slot here, as Doppler radar indicate a width as wide as 4.3 miles.

How many tornadoes have happened worldwide in the last 100 years?

It is not known as there are no accurate records going back that far. The United States keeps the most detailed records, and even then official U.S. records only go back to 1950 and do not accurately record the number of tornadoes until the 1990s. Most countries do not keep detailed records of tornadoes and many tornadoes that touch down are never recorded. At a guess, based on U.S. statistics from the past couple decades, the worldwide number of tornadoes in the past 100 years is probably in the hundreds of thousands.
