Same as most coastal peoples: Fishing along the coast, farming inland, stores/markets in the cities and towns. Lambretta motor scooters and bicycles were the rage during the war...no doubt pleasure (tourist) boats and motor bikes with their accompanying repair shops take up a lot of business there.

Everyday people at everyday places, such as work or visiting, usually don't mention Vietnam anymore. If it is mentioned, it's just "Vietnam."
