MapInfo didn't design their neighborhood classification system. They purchased it from R.L. Polk around January 2001. The system called PSYTE was orignally developed in Canada using the 1990 census data and 75 years of Polk registration data. It was designed to better predict automotive preferences than the market leader Claritas Prism. When it was launched in the US PSYTE and its 66 clusters were marketed to be more precise in separating the top 10 and bottom 10 % of the population than its competitors. Its number one advantage was its instrinsic automotive information that was included in the development of the clusters themselves. While all other cluster systems of the day were developed with many inputs non of them included car registration data. So clusters were developed and then automotive information was correlated to the clusters as an overlay and used as targeting mechanism. PSYTE advantage was that its cluster development included vehicle purchase history as one of the variables that helped define each classification.
MapInfo has no information on the last time they updated the clusters so if they haven't refreshed the cluster system its most likey way out of date at this point.
