However, rewiring of axons from existing neurons can restore function lost to nerve damage by using different groups of neurons to perform the same action. Lesions to the sensory nerves of an arm leads to disuse of the arm and eventually the motor representation of that arm disappears in the brain. However, if the animal's good arm is restrained it will begin using its sensory-deprived arm (which it would not have otherwise done).
