this is a common problem amongst windows Vista and 7
1. Check to make sure that the audio driver is installed
you can do this by going into the control panel > System > Device Manager
2. Check in the sound properties that you have an output device selected.
3. If you go nowhere, reinstall your copy of windows, as sometimes this problem
persists despite the best efforts.
