The Northwest Indians made totem poles to represent a family's symbol. If there was a member from the family that had the wolf as their emblem and they married someone who came from a family that had the fox as their emblem then the couple would make a totem pole that had both the wolf and the fox on it plus a symbol to represent their future family.
