Jose Rizel the National Hero of the Philippines began his literary career very early. He wrote his first Tagalog poem Sa Aking Mga Kabata at the age of 8.

In March 1887 he wrote his first novel Noli Me Tangere a daring, satirical novel exposing the arrogance and despotism of the Spanish clergy.

In Paris in 1890 he reprinted Morga's Successos De Las Klas Filipinas.

In September 1890 he wrote his second novel (a sequel to the first) tittled El Filibusterism which was a lot more revolutionary.

In 1896 whilst in prison awaiting the death sentence he wrote the untitled poem which is known today as Ultimo Adios. This is considered a masterpiece, living documentation of his love of his country and also that of all Filipinos
