Traits can be determined by a single gene or by multiple genes. Many genes influence the regulation of others and sometimes even hide the existence of some. There isn't an answer to this question.

Do every animal inherit the same mix of genes from its parents?

Animals inherit most of their genes from their parents. These genes have been shuffled up however, which explains why siblings can be different from eachother even though they come from the same genetic sources (same two parents, each having been given 50% of their genome by each parent). A small proportion of a person genes are mutations, or changes that neither parent possesses. A huge amount of mutations occur in DNA that is deactivated however, so in most cases, doesn't manifest as a unique and first time phenotypic characteristic. Could mean that the person is a carrier however, but that's a slightly different issue.
