Number one cylinder is the back (by the fire wall ) left hand cylinder as you are facing, and looking into the engine compartment from the front of the vehicle. The even numbered cylinders are next to the radiator, and the odd numbered cylinders are next to the firewall.

Standing at the front of the vehicle looking into the engine compartment, the front of the engine is on your left. Therefore that puts the number one cylinder on your left near the firewall.

My 1996 Pontiac Transport has a "Dome Light Over-ride Switch" in the dash near the ash tray. It refers to lights coming on with the Doors are Open and allows you to switch it to "Off". Mine quit working so I went to a wrecking yard and picked one out of a wreck for $5 and everthing started working again. Hope this is helpful.
