In the Shakespearean play, Macbeth was the leader of Scotland. Macbeth was an actual, historical figure. And the genealogical and historical records have agreed with William Shakespeare in that regard.

As in the play, Macbeth indeeded succeeded King Duncan I. But Macbeth wasn't succeeded immediately by the King's son, the future Malcolm III. Instead, he was succeeded by his own stepson, the subsequent King Lulach. Lulach was the son of Macbeth's Lady, Gruoch ingen Boite, and her first husband, Gille Coemgain

Macbeth [c. 1014-August 15, 1057] ruled as a fine leader of Scotland. During and after his 17-year rule, he was called 'Ri Deircc', which meant 'the Red King' in honor of his red hair. Before becoming King of all the Scots, Macbeth was King of Mormaer and of of Fortriu. So he came well prepared, from solid regional experience, to his royal position of national importance.

As general, Macbeth [c. 1014-August 15, 1057] was a military leader of Scotland. He became a political leader as well, for 17 years. In fact, as King, he was the top leader of the entire country of Scotland. He became sovereign in 1040, with the death of his predecessor, King Duncan I [d. August 14, 1040].
