"It says" means it communicates. This is different to it speaks. So there is nothing wrong with saying it says when referring to a written document. An alternative would be to credit the author where possible, and this also serves to make the narrative sound less imperative. For example, "Freud's opinion was..." or "Erickson says later in the article..."
