Question was posted in category WW2. There were not any "old soldiers' who carried spears, unless you mean the Swiss Guard who protected the Pope at the Vatican. Otherwise, there were many types of soldiers who carried spears or long-handle battle axes. Even as late as 1860's, the pike was carried by non-commissioned officers as a sign of their rank. Pikemen carried very long spears. Roman Centurians soldiers carried a short spear.

Burning Spear is 63 years old (birthdate: March 1, 1948).
A Pikestaff is a an old fashioned weapon rather like a bayonet. It was made to be a very long spear for thrusting violently into the enemy. The deployment was two-handed and was used by infantry for attacking enemy soldiers in Cavalry charges. It wasn't a weapon for throwing like a spear, but more for stabbing. It sounds quite barbaric.
As of the end of the 2013-2014 NFL season Carey Spear is 22 years old.

Usually if a soldier said he was in 'the 27th Infantry" he was referring to his regiment. The 27th Infantry was one of the three infantry regiments in the 25th Infantry Division. The 25th ID was in Hawaii, at Schofield Barracks, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Japanese also strafed Schofield Barracks and bombed a mess hall at Schofield Barracks. The 25th ID went on to fight on Guadalcanal and Luzon, in the Philippines. The shoulder patch of the division is in the shape of a taro leaf, in red, with a yellow lightening bolt on it. Its nickname is "Tropic Lightning" or the "Pineapple Division", because some of its units were drawn from the old Hawaiian Division. The 25th ID also served in Korean and Vietnam.Sometimes civilians will refer to an infantry division the same way a soldier did his regiment, in which case they will say "the 27th Infantry" when the really mean the 27th Infantry Division. There is a 27th Infantry Division, and in peacetime it is the New York National Guard. The 27th ID served in France in WWI and elements of it served in the Pacific in WWII, on Saipan and Okinawa.

Guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier is a very important job; that is why there is very stern qualifications for a guard to the tomb. One for example is that the person must be between 5'10" and 6'4" and Physiclly fit. Another is that before a person is even eligable to be one of the guards for this important tomb they must memorize seven pages of Arlington National Cemetery and then be able to recite it, and they must be a volunteer from the 3rd Infantry.
