The starter should be between the engine and trans on the right side of the truck. Disconnect battery, remove wire from starter to battery. There should only be 3 bolts attaching the starter to the trans bellhousing.
Disconnect wires then two bolts holding starter to trans.

Have you checked the ignition switch on the column . I had to replace the one in my 1977 Trans Am.

Not very. It was one of the most popular years for the Trans Am. There may be some rare optioned T/As for that year, but the 78 Trans Am in and of itself is not a rare car.
