What is a junior lifeguard?

In Canada, a Junior Lifeguard is a lifeguard who has their NLS (National Lifesaving) certificate but is under the age of 18--the minimum age for lifeguard certification is 16. Because they are so young, they are legally not able to be responsible for a large group of people, and so are not allowed to guard by themselves. Typically a junior guard is hired for shift where two or more guards are needed so there can be a senior guard (over the age of 18) with them. I'm not sure about the States (but I think it is the same). There is also something different called Junior Lifeguard Club. The members of this club are not usually lifeguards, but take part in lifesaving activities that will build their swimming and rescue skills. This makes it much easier for them once they have reached an age to get thier certification.
