Clark Kent was born on the planet Krypton with the name Kal-El. However, when Krypton was on the verge of destruction, Kal-El's father, Jor-El, built a spacecraft and send his son away, saving his life. The child landed on the planet Earth, where he was adopted and raised by the Kents and given the name Clark. He had no knowledge of his actual birthplace throughout his childhood.
Kal-El is his Kryptonian name meaning Star Child. ( Kara, Supergirl"s real name means approximately Jewel and is an old German usage.) The Kents dubbed him Clark Kent as we all know as is street name. at one time he used, under cover the related alias of Kenneth Clarkson,sort of an anglicized Clark Kent in reverse.

Yes as is shown in the Smallville series finale the Smallville show is allowed to use the Superman name however it was a creative choice by the Producers and the writers themselves to decide to not refer to the Superman title until they felt their Clark Kent was ready to become Superman and therefore was ready to wear tights and take flights.
