. . .
This is a movie-only line.
However, on page 141 of The Hunger Games, Peeta and Katniss are sitting on the roof of the Training Center talking before the Games. After Katniss tells Peeta not to act so depressed, he says he doesn't want to disgrace himself and that "Only...I want to die as myself. Does that make any sense? I don't want them to turn me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I'm not."
The movie simply kind of changed this line.

It means that when Peeta is being kind to Katniss, it's harder for her to hate him, and if she doesn't hate him, she can't kill him. She needs to kill him if she wants to win The Hunger Games.
Technically, only one. Peeta tells Caesar that he killed Brutus in the 75th Hunger Games. This was his only direct kill. Many people say that he killed Foxface too, but he didn't. Foxface died because she stole some poisonous berries from Peeta. Peeta hadn't fed them to her, he didn't even know that she had taken them until she died from eating them. And in the 74th Hunger Games, Peeta just pretends that he killed the girl who lit the fire next to Katniss's tree. This was a lie to build the Careers' trust, so he could protect Katniss from them. The only reason the cannon didn't fire when Cato killed her, was because the Gamemakers were signalling that Katniss was treed next to them. Peeta went back to 'finish her off' but didn't do anything since she was already dead.

Peeta, like other victors, could probably say that the Capitol is his biggest enemy. However, in Mockingjay, you could argue that Peeta's biggest enemy is himself or Katniss.
When The anouncment was made that only one could be the victor, so that meant that Peeta and Katniss had to fight and one had to die.

Katniss's connection to Peeta, is, the fact that they are living in the same district and got picked for the same Games. Also, if you have read the book, you would have found that Peeta's dad is a baker, and Peeta used to pretend to 'drop' a loaf for Katniss so she could eat.
He was secretly leading the Careers away from Katniss so that she could stay alive and hidden, while he was still safe in the pack.
The denouement of the Hunger Games is that Peeta and Katniss have won the 74th Hunger Games, and they get to go back to their home in District 12.
The gamemaster tells the tributes they can have two winners from the same team, that there is a supper, that there could be only one winner, and that Katniss and Peeta are winners together.
Well being from the point of view of Katiniss, the major protaganist is Katniss herself. You could have the protaganist maybe confused as being Peeta but its definitely Katniss.

Peeta loved Katniss, and once, when she was starving in the winter she caught him staring at her and when she looked away, her eyes spotted a dandelion. It was a signal of hope that spring is here and she could go collecting or hunting, that all isn't lost. Later, Katniss associated Peeta with the dandelion.
Katniss and Peeta knew that the Hunger Games could have only one victor, not two. But they didn't want to kill each other and so in order to defy the Capital, their notions with the poisonous berries were saying that they both had to be victors or there wouldn't be one. All or nothing
