"The Wizard of Oz" is the children's film upon which the musical "Wicked" is loosely based.
Specifically, the former film was released back in 1939. It was based upon the original book written by Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) and published in 1900. Almost 100 years later, Gregory Maguire (b. June 9, 1954) published "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." All three sources have been incorporated loosely into the musical "Wicked."
It is loosely based on Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift.
The 1956 Science fiction film Forbidden Planet is loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest.
There is scedueled to be a "Wicked" movie in a year or 2 (according to IMDB), but it will be based on the musical that is based on the book, not the book itself. It will be good either way though!!! :)
There well may be a film about the Wicked Witch of the East if the success of the musical 'Wicked' continues. Within the next couple of years, there may be a film version of the popular musical based on the popular book of the same title. Any film version will concentrate on the interaction between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West; and on Glinda the Good. But just as in the play and the book, there's room for Nessarose, the Wicked Witch of the East.
