distance = rate * time

time= distance / rate

Time for first leg = 15 miles / 40 miles/hr = 0.375 hr

Time for second leg = 15 miles / 10 miles/hr = 1.5 hr

Total time for trip = 1.875 hr

rate=distance/time

Average rate = (15+15)/1.875 = 30/1.875 = 16mph!
