The main reason was Russia's involvement in the First World War where for 3 years in a row it had been severely beaten in almost all the battles it had fought, and therefore nothing to show for all the deprivation and massive loss of life. Army and Navy morale was at its lowest ebb. Dictatorships (as that by the Tsar of Russia) are historically known for rarely being able to survive major military defeats.

The Germans helped Lenin into Russia in 1917 in order to stir up trouble within the armed forces and so seal the German victory in the East. Once the regiments started rebelling against being sent to face yet another defeat, central authority quickly crumbled.
