Democracy has one very considerable advantage over other systems of government, which is that it contains a non-violent method by which the public can rid themselves of a government that they don't like and obtain a new government, by the simple expedient of voting. In non-democratic systems, a change of government is usually accomplished through violence, which can be tremendously destructive. So, even though America has often had a corrupt or incompetent government, the democratic system itself has served America well, as a peaceful means of regime change. Americans understand this well enough that they would be extremely reluctant to give up democracy.
