American Liberty League
Liberty League
The American Liberty League was a political organization formed in 1934 by conservative Democrats and Republicans to oppose President Franklin Roosevelt and his policies. Despite their efforts, Roosevelt was elected in a landslide in 1936 and the League started to disintegrate. By 1940 it ceased to exist.
TR was not conservative, he was Progressive.
Hoover was Republican; Roosevelt and Truman were Democrats.
The American Liberty League was an American political organization. It was founded in 1934 and aimed to help the Roosevelt administration. The organization was composed mainly of conservative Democrats.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Democrat Theodore Roosevelt: Republican, except the election of 1912, in which he was with the Progressive / Bull Moose Party
Franklin Roosevelt was a very liberal Democrat- more so than any before him. Therefore, he was naturally opposed by Republicans and conservative Democrats. You see the same thing today.
Herbert C. Hoover, the incumbent, for the Republicans and Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Democrats.
Because back around that time, there was no real divide between "Liberal" and "Conservative". Instead, the Republicans were most popular in the Northern States while the Democrats were most popular in the South, regardless of wealth. After the Civil War there was no slavery to support, but the 'Dixiecrats' (Southern Democrats) continued to refuse to support equal rights for freed slaves. For some time, Black Americans used to vote for Republicans because of Abraham Lincoln. It was Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal which persuaded them to support the Democrats, but the Democrats maintain the support of (racist) White Southerners until the 1960s.
he had always regarded the republican party as too conservative
Theodore Roosevelt failed to win the Republican nomination in 1912 and he wanted to be President, so he formed his own party and ran against the Republicans and Democrats.
The democrats controlled both the house and senate during the entire time FDR was in office. Still, the Southern Democrats or Dixiecrats frequently voted with the Republicans.
In approx. 1932. From 1860-1932, the Democratic Party represented the Southern States (which were conservative) while the Republican Party represented the Northern States. The Republicans were a mix, some were fairly liberal (or progressive) such as Theodore Roosevelt, others were fairly conservative, such as Calvin Coolidge. The Great Depression led to power being transferred to the Democratic Party, which became the party of Franklin Roosevelt. Opponents of Roosevelt joined the Republicans. Although Roosevelt kept the Democratic Party's firm support from the South, Southerners would gradually move over to the Republicans.
