The hooks
Not completely sure of the year, but it was in the 90's. Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio and Derek Bell were the original "Killer B's."
The Astros entered the National League in 1962 as the Houston Colt 45s. The name was changed to Astros in 1965 when the team moved into the Astrodome.

The word Astros is short for astronauts. They are called the Astros because NASA has a large base that produces a lot of jobs in Houston, Texas. Houston considers NASA to be a big part of their town, so therefor when the name The Houston Colt .45's was changed the name Astros fit well because NASA was becoming big in the midst of the space race with Russia.
