Roman Catholic doctrine is that not only was Mary a virgin at the time of Jesus' birth, she remained one for the rest of her life, and the references to Jesus' "brothers" really mean "cousins" or something.
Most Protestant religions say that the references in The Bible to Jesus' brothers really mean brothers (well, half-brothers, or at least apparent brothers, depending on exactly how much they think Mary had to do with the whole thing), and that Mary and Joseph were a normal husband and wife after Jesus' birth.
