4 Japanese aircraft carriers, (4 of their best), and a heavy cruiser sunk and the turning back of an invasion force, the first major defeat for Japan in WW2. Set against the US loss of 1 carrier and 1 destroyer, both by the same submarine.

The scale of human loss for Japan: US was about 10:1.

The Japanese Navy never really recovered from the defeat at Midway.
