There are two answers to this question - a traditional answer and an answer based on more recent scholarly research.

The traditional answer is that Moses wrote the first five books (the 'Pentateuch') of The Bible, around 1440 BCE, while the last books of the Protestant Old Testament were written shortly after the Babylonian Exile. This would mean that the Old Testament was written over a period of around 1000 years.

On the other hand, the Book of Deuteronomy is believed to be the Book of Law that was said to have been found in the Temple during the reign of King Josiah - around 622 BCE. Many scholars believe that the book was actually written at this time, but placed in the Temple, to be found, so as to lend antiquity to it. The same author, now known as the Deuteronomist, also put together material that had been written by earlier sources in the ninth and eighth centuries BCE, to create the earliest version of Genesis. The latest book of the Protestant Old Testament was Daniel, written in the second century BCE. On this basis, the Old Testament was written over a period of approximately 450 years, ending in the second century BCE.

The Catholic Old Testament includes additional 'Deuterocanonical' books written later in the second century BCE.

We can not be certain exactly how long the New Testament took to write. Paul's earliest epistles are commonly dated to perhaps the late 40s. while Hebrews could be even earlier. Some of the other epistles could contain material written well before 30 CE. Probably the last book in the New Testament to be completed is Second Peter, which some scholars date to between 120 and 150 CE. Thus, the New Testament spans a period of around one hundred years.

What was the total number of years it took to develop the Old Testament?

The Old Testament was not developed as a conscious project, with the original intention of creating a single volume. Individual books were written, often anonymously, then copied and used for a number of years before being re-edited, redacted or added to by others.Tradition has the Pentateuch written in the middle of the second millennium BCE and some think the Book of Job is even older, with Daniel written during the Babylonian Exile. This would mean that the Old Testament was written over a period of around one thousand years.Scholars generally believe that the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomic History (Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings) were begun during the seventh-century BCE reign of King Josiah. However, some of the material used in Genesis is considered to date from as early as the ninth century BCE. Scholars consider the Book of Daniel to have been the last of the Old Testament books to be written. It is believed to have been written sometime between 167 and 164 BCE. On this evidence, the Old Testament was written more or less as we know it today over a period of more than five hundred years, and contains material that was developed over a period of at least seven hundred years.
