Sandro Botticelli was born in Florence, Italy in 1445 in a house in the Via Nuova, Borg'Ognissanti. He was born to Smeralda, his mother, and Mariano di Vanni dei Filipepí, his father.He was born into a middle class family. His given name was Alessandro di Mariano Filipepí. He shorten his first name and used his nickname, Botticelli meaning "Little Barrel", given to him by his brother. Giorgio Vasari reported that he was initially trained as a goldsmith by his brother, Antonio. Sandro Botticelli helped other painters like Fra Filippo Lippi, who initially trained his to be an artist. After the death of Fra Filippo Lippi in 1469, Lippi's son, Filippino, taught Botticelli on becoming an artist. Not much else is known about Botticelli's early life.
