The communist superpowers supported the north with war material. The US supported the south with men & material. Reason: Cold War.

The Cold War developed from the conflict between the US and the USSR, which sought to become the dominant world power. The US opposed all communist governments, while the USSR supported many, and established puppet regimes in Eastern Europe.
The US responded with alarm, and supported the anti-communist Kuo Min Tang on the island of Taiwan, whose independence from mainland China is even now supported by the US, although the Cold War has ended.
The cold war included no actual combat. It was fought with threats of nuclear warfare. Also fought with "proxy" wars. (Vietnam and Korea) The soviets supported North Korea, and the US supported South Korea. These were wars fought between the two countries through other countries.
