There are several types of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV's).
Some follow wires that are embedded in the floor. When that type of AGV is used, there will typically be multiple frequencies on several wire "loops". Some of the loops will be positioned to indicate the guidepath, and others will be positioned to indicate absolute position on the floor, for example a stopping point.
Other types of AGV's use inertial guidance, meaning that the vehicles may use optical, magnet or other means to determine absolute position and direction, then as the vehicle moves the onboard computer uses wheel sensors to determine absolute distance travelled.
Still other vehicles use a series of cameras, radio signals, infrared detectors or other devices to determine location and how far to travel.
