Try lubing all moving parts then.....good luck using the motor
The tailgate cables on the S10 may have to be drilled out and must be riveted in place. GM has a recall on these cables and will replace them, parts and labor for no charge at the dealership.
If the tailgate is dropped hard it can toggle the locking mechanism. If you don't have a key to unlock the tailgate, you'll have to remove the plastic side of the tailgate (the inside) and flip the locking lever back to the unlocked position. While you have the cover off you might as well put some drops of oil on all of the metal moving parts inside the tailgate.
You need to order the part(s) first, which you can do at your local Toyota dealership or at an auto parts store. Then, you simply disassemble the tailgate, remove the defective latch component, and put in the new part, and then reassemble the tailgate.
i have a 1999 Chevy silverado and i do know that i had to take mine into dealer for replacement parts. check out the recalls for 1999-newer and they have the tailgate parts as recalled and will replace some of them for free, including free labor. hope that helps!
The inside of the tailgate, that is the part that faces up when the tailgate is down will have a panel that is held on by screws, it will give you access to the inner workings. Usually it is a little 20 cent retainer that has broken and is available at any parts store.
I had to take my latch apart and lube it up really good.
Hold the tailgate open about half way, release both tailgate straps, lift up and out on passenger side of tailgate, slide tailgate to the right, done.
