The American patriot in command of the colonial militia at Lexington was Captain John Parker. A veteran of previous fighting on the continent, Parker was a shrewd leader who did not wish to waste lives in a one-sided action against the professional "red-coats". Still, he was full of courage and determined to make a demonstration: his words, "...if they mean to have a war, let it begin here", continue to have inspirational power to this day.
