St. Paul holds generally a pretty high opinion of women, because he considers matters of sex and gender to be integral to the Church, instead of just ignoring women altogether, as he easily could have done. The "writings attributed to Paul" do reflect at times a fairly rigid hierarchy, and often place women below men concerning functional roles. Remember that Paul's treatments of sex/gender are primarily situational and/or intended to convey truth about God and the Church. In fact, most of Paul's material is written in the form of letters to a particular groups of people at particular times in particular places, and often in response to specific problems. This of course does not mean that Paul's letters do not reflect eternal truth, only that we should study them carefully and apply them judiciously.
