If I remember right, if you Archive and Install it will only erase the CORE operating system and not the other files. It just re-installs over the OS.You may have to reinstall some 3rd party applications but the other files and folders SHOULDN'T be touched. If you do an Erase and Install it will wipe the HD clean and install a brand new OS.Make a backup just to make sure. The USB external HD housings are real cheap and you can buy your own HD to put in it for a backup drive.
