Sunlight - this is used by the green pigments in plant leaves, in a process called photosynthesis, to make sugars on which the pant then lives. All animal life on the surface of Earth eats plants to survive and therefore all life on earth (apart form some specialist examples) live on sunlight. Plants can also grow from normal light hence photosynthesis

Yes - during photosynthesis, plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make carbohydrates (which is sugar) to use for energy. Animals get energy from eating carbs. Plants can't eat, so they have to make their own carbs for energy.
