There are pansies in the violet family and violas also in the same family. These give abundant color during winter months. Unfortunately, in the south, they are not perennials. If you want winter annuals the pansies are great! You will also find snapdragons to be hardy in the south for winter color as well. They often rebloom over and over throughout he spring.
Hellebore plants and tulips also bring about a splash of color. Best idea, go to your local garden shop to find zone hardy winter blooms. This is sure to bring you success in the garden and lots of color for you and your neighbors to enjoy!
Hmmmm....I would use brocolie, radishes, carrots, onions, scallions, lettuce, kolhrabi, rutabages, strawberries, and much much more! -Hope This Helps -Bradley.

depends on which plant and how cold it is but generaly speaking-yes they can but not all do.
Yes, their growth slows down because of cooler temperatures and shorter days and exposure to sunlight.
Plants need sunlight to grow . If you put it in a dark closet , It will still grow , but not healthy and it will end up yellow, dyeing early , and fast .
Depends on the type of plant - there is no standard. Some seasonal annual plants grow exceptionally fast and complete their lifecyle within a few weeks. Others can take literally thousands of years between germination and death. Some bamboo species can grow between 30 and 40 cm per day, other plants such as the Welwitchia desert plant will grow about 1 cm every 10 years!
Most slow down, a bit like hibernating (see Yahoo answers to the same question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080202020452AA189mU). Trees that don't lose their leaves can continue to photosynthesise in winter. Some trees flower in winter and others grow berries, so these ones are obviously still active above ground. All of them are active below ground - their roots continue to grow. (See this article: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/nov/28/tree-roots-grow-during-winter/)
Some plants grow in winter. But most plants adaptations are to live in warm weather. Why? That's just so.
I think it depends on what plants you are talking about because some rice plants grow best in flooded land but a lot of plants will die with out soil.

Plants grow at different rates. Some plants like bamboo grow very fast. Others grow very slowly.
Generally, coniferous trees grow in the winter. It is also the growing season for citrus, hearty leafy greens, squash, and root vegetables.
Plants take around 7 hours to grow.
They grow faster, because it is rainier.
