you cant "make him" see the island, you just have to check every now and then. its similar to the desert pillar, and the eevee->umbreon or eevee->espeon, all depending on the time of the game and the date.
(i cant give you direct details like "AT THIS TIME THINGS HAPPEN" but i can give you a general time space)
example: eevee evolves into an espeon when s/he gains a level in the morning with full happiness while s/he would evolve into umbreon at night.
