Pokemon siver you press save you see your progress its not there how come gameboy sp?

Even though you saved the game Pokemon silver and gold have a special clock battery in the game pak in all copies of the game they are dry meaning your unable to save your progress even though its says in the game Silver saved the game or whatever you put as your name.
