Cut the PVC pipe at a convenient location near the bad fitting into the pump. Remove the fitting from the pump housing or discharge side of the pump. Thread in the proper size MIP to slip fitting, cut about a 4" to 6" piece of PVC pipe ( or long enough to seat into the Mip fitting and at the other end seat into a 90 elbow. The straight piece of pipe may have to be adjusted to fit into the 90 that comes from the other connecting pipe). You may glue these pieces together using the PVC cement primer prior to using the PVC cement. Connect your 90 onto these pieces you have just fit and glued being sure it lines up with the existing old pipe. cut about a 3 to 4" section of pipe and glue the 90 and the short pipe to the previous - making sure all pipes line up in direction and height. Cut another 4" or so pipe and glue into the remaining end of the 90. Add a PVC union to this newly built pipe- being sure you don't glue the separating parts of the union - now add a coupling to the old PVC and glue. Now cut to measure the remaining section of PVC pipe - being sure you allow for both ends of the PVC to seat properly. Glue as needed on both ends. Be sure to clean the burrs off the cut pipe sections.

By the time you pick up your tools and clean the area and have a beer, the job should be ready to start the pump. Prime the pump if needed.
The union facilitates access if you need to take the pump apart in the future - you don't have to cut the pipe. Test for leaks. I also do not know the configuration of the piping so lengths of pipe are only estimates.

YES THERE IS A LOT OF TRASH THAT CAN GET IN THE VALVE TO MAKE IT LEAK. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO CLEAN IT FURTHER I found that with the pump running, the pool water was rising as apparently the pump was pulling water out of the ground. This was with the pool water low and the skimmer plugged off in order to try to filter after a bad storm. When I shut off the pump, the pool water went down as the valve did not seat properly.

I think it could be normal, if the pool is not losing water. On my filter and pump, I have a valve, that when open, causes bubbles to come out of the low end jets, simulating the jets of a jacuzzi. When closed, there are no bubbles. If the pool is losing water, then the appearance of bubbles in the pump, or coming out of the jets could be due to air from from the outside which would mean a leak in one or more of the lines or at the fittings. Also, I'm curious as to how one would "pressure check" a return line from the skimmer, the main drain or vacuum line since these wouldn't be under pressure from the pump. If your pool is blowing air back into the pool through the return lines, it is caused by an air leak, on the suction side of the pump. Because the pump is above the water level of the pool, you will not lose any water. To check to see if you are sucking air at the pump, turn the pump on and take some dish detergent and squirt it along each plumbing fitting in front of the pump. Watch to see if any soap bubbles form in the pump housing. If so, you'll probably need to to replace those fittings, one of them is leaking. ANSWER:: The leak discussed above could involve both in and out fittings on the pump or it could be a leaking pump seal or a loose pump lid or lid gasket. The probable cause of this leak at the fittings is that the pump ran dry at some point in time causing the PVC fittings to become hot and shrink. Pressure testing of the return lines involves plugging those lines at the pool and and pump. The people who do this sort of thing have a tool or tools to insert in the system and introducing air into those lines monitoring pressure loss in each particular line through a process of elimination.
