I believe you are referring to ZIP codes Zip codes went formal in 1963. They got a lot of publicty a the time. Its an acronym for Zone Improvement plan. Zip codes are in synch with the numerical code of the post office. I live in zone 07306 and that is the Journal Square station. Look closely the zone numbers are somewhere on the signs outside every post office!
