They are called conventions. They are traditions that the government follow but are not necessarily written down and form part of the unwritten constitution. E.g. the queen of England doesn't have to appoint the leader of the party with the majority in the house of commons (she can appoint whoever she wants whether they are a politician or not) but she does it because it is a convention; not law but a tradition.
