The primary benefit of joining any club is to interact with a group of people with a shared interest. This is especially useful for fitness since many people have a hard time staying with a fitness program and find that group solidarity can help where individual willpower sometimes falters. Also, for competitive types, a fitness club allows for friendly competition. This can also be a negative, however, if competition is taken too far and leads to animosity and rancor. Also, if one is far behind the group in terms of fitness or ability, one can feel intimidated and/or inadequate. Having sympathetic and friendly group members, however, can go a far way to alleviating any anxieties one may have and even open the possibility of forming lasting and meaningful friendships.

Since the personal health benefits of joining a fitness club outweighs those of not joining one, a prudent course would be to find one that does an activity that one enjoys or has an interest in, and then find a club at the appropriate skill level.
