When you pull on your hair it hurts your scalp because your hair is connected to it.When you cut your hair it doesn't hurt because your hair doesn't have nerves. When you pull on hair you also stretch it out which can cause you hair to have weak spots. When you cut it you cut it from the bottom so it is still able to grow without damage.
Pulling of hair is pain because hair follicle is surrounded by nerve endings which can detect the movement of pulling of hair. Whereas cutting the hair is just cutting the shaft which is dead, keratinized epithelium, and doesn't have nerves. Therefore this does not hurt.
Hair is not "living" like the rest of your cells. They are extruded (pushed out) from hair follicles. Your hair follicles have nerve endings and blood running to them. When your hair is pulled, the hair is also pulling on the follicle. When you cut your hair, it's just shortening the strands. Since there are no nerves in the hair itself, it doesn't hurt to cut it.
Your hair is actually just waste from your body - it isn't alive. The only part of the hair that's alive is the nerve at the tip. This is why it hurts to pull your hair. The same goes with fingernails and toenails.
Basically there is pain when you pull on hair and nails because they are still attached. It it the body's way of telling you there is danger. Some people do experience pain when their nails are cut, but I have never heard of normal hair hurting when it is cut. If you have knots in your hair and they have been there a while, it can hurt when they are removed if you are not careful. Same is true for matted hair in animals...it hurts because some of the hairs are still attached and perhaps have become infected.
The hair, like your nails, is dead. But at the root, where it's being "made",there are live cells. And they don't like getting pulled at.
Not as much popping, as scraping or cutting off. *warning* It is painful. The common procedure is scraping or cutting the white part off (which is the source of the infection). It is recommended to use something like a toothbrush with quite a few painkillers.
I had this boy in my year who had that and I heard it was quite painful.
Quite painful, indeed.

Snapping your banjo string can be quite painful

No. However, spasmodic torticollis is quite a painful condition (in the neck).
Your ankle is usually quite painful to walk on.
Pain was not bad I just had it done and I had packing in for one day and really the most painful part was pulling out the packing. I have Tylenol #3 for pain in case but surprisingly for a procedure in that area I was quite surprised. You will be a little sore, which is not surprising but nothing horrible bad.
