The purpose of starting a business depends on the person starting it. However, the underlying reason is usually one of three:

  • To make money, if it is a for-profit business
  • To create awareness of some lack (non-profit or not-for-profit)
  • To prove something

If the person wants to make more money than she currently makes, and if she has enough drive and motivation for it, she'll often begin a business toward that end. If she does this, it's normal that she won't see as much money as she'd like when she begins; tenacity and a good business plan will usually see her through.

If the person wants to create an awareness of a lack, (for example, children who are starving in a remote corner of the world or an unjust outcome of a cause near and dear to her heart), she'll begin a business to promote that awareness. Her purpose there is often to change the outcome of the awareness (to raise funds for the starving children or to reverse the outcome).

Then, there is the person who begins a business to prove that she can indeed "do something right" or fix a broken thing. Whether it's to prove something to herself or to someone else, and whether it's to create an answer to a nagging problem (example: build a better wheelchair for a specific illness) this reason can be a strong motivator.
