Samuel de Champlain (né à Brouage entre 1567 et 1574 et mort à Québec le 25 décembre 1635) est le nom de l'explorateur français qui a établi le premier établissement permanent en Nouvelle-France. Il travaillait durement comme auteur de récits de voyage, cartographe, commandant, explorateur, géographe, navigateur et soldat. Il a enraciné la première colonie française permanente à Port Royal avec Pierre Dugua de Mons (né à Royan vers 1560 et mort à Fléac-sur-Seugne en 1628) et puis à Québec en 1608.
