Il travaillait durement comme auteur de récits de voyage, cartographe, commandant, explorateur, géographe, navigateur et soldat. Il a enraciné la première colonie française permanente à Port Royal avec Pierre Dugua de Mons (né à Royan vers 1560 et mort à Fléac-sur-Seugne en 1628) et puis à Québec en 1608.
