The nut doesn't fall far from the tree basically means that one is not that different from ones parent. Its symbolizing that the the nut [the offspring] doesn't not fall from [is not so different] the tree [the parent]. Its sort of like the saying 'like father like son'. The thing is, its often used in a negative way. For example, if a 14 year old is caught acting or behaving in a way his/hers parent acts or use to act some one who recognizes this might say "the apple/nut/acorn doesn't fall far from the tree."
