Radioactivity was discovered on March 1, 1896, by a French physicist named Henri Becquerel, this discovery is now known as one of the most famous accidental discoveries in the history of physics. Becquerel was then awarded half of the noble prize for physics in 1903, the other half being given to Pierre and Marie Curie for their study of the Becquerel radiation.

Radium was discovered because Marie Sklodowska-Curie and her husband and research partner Pierre, were curious about the makeup of pitchblend. In their efforts to investigate the elements that made up this complex mineral, they discovered eminations (which were the results of radioactive decay). A link to the Wikipedia article on radium is supplied.
