The German 6th army was sent in to capture the city while the weaker and ill equipped romanian 3rd and 4th armies were left outside the city to guard the flanks.

So the Soviets launched an offensive against the axis forces outside the city which nearly annihilated the romanian forces and now Stalingrad with the 6th army was encircled.

And Hitler refused to give General Von Paulus permission to stage a breakout attempt, partually because chief of the luftwaffe (Hermann Göring) had convinced Hitler that the luftwaffe could bring in enough supplies to the 6th army but in reality it could only bring in a small portion of the supplies that the 6th army needed.

In December 1942 the German 4th panzer army under command of Field marshal Erich Von Manstein launched Operation Winter storm to relieve the German 6th army, the offensive caught the soviets by suprise and was initially successful but the relief force was not large enough and the Soviets managed to stop the German advance, so the German 6th army was doomed, around 95 000 men surrendered to the Soviets, only 5000 ever lived to return to Germany.
