Molly Pitcher (Mary Ludwig Hays) was on the side of the Patriots. (Who were the colonists which were fighting for freedom from the British Crown)
For various reasons, batters hit better when they are on the side of the plate opposite from the side the pitcher is throwing from. A batter who can hit equally well from both sides of the plate thus eliminates any advantage a pitcher throwing from the same side would have. Thus, Mantle was raised to be a switch hitter by his family.
Molly Pitcher was born in October 13, 1754 at New Jersey. She licked the water and gave the water to the soldiers as a sign of respect. She was 79 when she died. She was not very wealthy but became rich and remarried Died January 22, 1832.Her real name was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley.Interesting facts about Molly Pitcher
